A guardian is responsible for personal or care decisions within authority defined by law and any court order.

A parent's nomination in a will is important evidence but does not eliminate the court's best-interest review.

Identify each child or dependent and the state likely to decide a future guardianship question. Discuss willingness, age, health, location, household, values, caregiving skill, and long-term capacity with candidates. Name backups and consider whether the guardian and property manager should be the same or different people. Document schooling, health, disability, culture, religion, sibling, pet, travel, and family-contact priorities. Estimate housing, care, education, insurance, transportation, and support costs and the funds available. Coordinate guardian nominations with the will, trust, beneficiary forms, custody orders, and co-parent rights. Avoid promises that a nomination can eliminate court review or override another living parent's rights. Tell the appropriate people where the signed nomination and practical care instructions are kept.
