An executor is nominated by a will but generally needs court-issued authority before acting for the estate.

The executor's work includes safeguarding property, separating estate funds, documenting transactions, and following priority and distribution rules.

Open a dated administration log showing each action, person contacted, advice received, and deadline. Preserve the court appointment, bond, tax identification, will, orders, notices, and proof of service. Create an asset inventory tied to statements, appraisals, title records, possession, and date-of-death values. Track every receipt and payment through an appropriate estate account without mixing personal funds. Maintain creditor, tax, insurance, benefit, property, and litigation files with status and supporting evidence. Record communications and proposed distributions to interested people consistently and securely. Reconcile interim and final accountings to bank records, sale documents, expenses, reserves, and distributions. Retain filed, accepted, released, receipted, or court-approved proof that each administration step closed.
